Jaiyne walked through the halls of the school to which she had
become accustomed. She was the queen of the school. The official bad-girl. And she was bisexual. But what could they do about
it? Nobody could ever control her. As she passed a girl, Yukiko, in the hall, she winked at her and continued on. Instantly,
Yukiko’s face became bright red. “Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for that Kiba guy?” Her friend
Kariru asked, pointing to the guy passing by. “No… Just… thought he was pretty cute today…”
She lied, and continued on.
Episode One: Evasion
“Your name is Yukiko
right?” Asked Jaiyne, appearing behind Yukiko at her locker. Startled, she jumped backwards, knocking into Jaiyne, and
falling right on top of her. Yukiko’s face turned redder than ever. “I… um… have to go!” She
slammed her locker and ran off down the hall.
“…” Jaiyne
stared down the hall, watching her disappear through a doorway.
Jaiyne skipped class and
waited for Yukiko outside of that room. As she exited the door, Jaiyne grabbed her arm.
“Hey! So your name
is Yukiko?” she asked persistently.
“Umm… Yes…”
Yukiko replied, her face growing bright again.
“Oh. I knew it. I’m
Jaiyne.”
“Jane? Isn’t
that an American name?”
“No… Jaiyne.
With an I and a Y… not really anything. My mom made it up.”
“Oh…” They
began to walk down the hall together.
“So… Why don’t
I know you, Yukiko?”
“Actually, we know
eachother. Just not well.”
“True…”
“About this morning…”
“Huh?”
“You winked at me…”
“Oh yeah… Cuz
I think you’re cute…”
“Huh??” Her face
grew redder.
“Listen, if you have
a problem with my being bisexual…”
“Huh!?! Oh… no
that’s not it! Nothing’s wrong with that!”
“Well then what is
it?” Jaiyne asked, slowing to a stop.
“N…Nothing…”
Yukiko’s face grew red in embarrassment. “Umm… I have to go…” And she sped up, vanishing into
the gym auditorium.
“Oh… what’s the use?” Jaiyne stood in the hallway for a while. “Hey…
I heard you talking to Yukiko! You can’t talk to her like that! She’s not one of your sick gay friends!”
Kariru screamed at Jaiyne from behind. Seeing no point to argue, Jaiyne walked away, without a second glance back.
Kariru glared at Jaiyne.
“Get back here!” She stomped up to her furiously and knocked her to the floor. “STUPID LESBIAN!” she
screamed as she kicked her in the side. Infuriated, Jaiyne picked herself up and punched Kariru clear in the face, this time
knocking her to the floor. “Nobody hits me without getting hit back.” Jaiyne kicks her and walks away calmly.
“Jaiyne, let me make
myself clear. No more trouble. Do you know who reported you?”
“I could take one guess…”
“And who is that?”
“Kariru?”
“Yes… Do you
know why Miss Tomoyama reported you?”
“Umm… Gee I dunno.”
Jaiyne replied, acting dumb.
“You fought her?”
“Yeah. But she started
it, and nobody hits me without getting hit back.”
“Jaiyne, you know that
I don’t permit fighting in my school!”
“Yeah… I know.
But I also know that I’m allowed to fight back in self defense.”
“Frankly, I couldn’t
know. You’ve already caused so much trouble this semester alone!”
“Well frankly, I don’t
like getting discriminating comments from people I don’t really like.”
“ ‘Discriminating
Comments’?”
“ ‘Stupid lesbian’
makes it into my book.”
“I’ll have a
talk with Miss Tomoyama but please Jaiyne, for the sake of Pete, no more trouble!”
Jaiyne stormed out of the
main office. Stupid people…Stupid, stupid people. She thought
She passed the girl’s
restroom and glanced inside. Yukiko! She almost blurted out loud. “Hey!”
“Hey…”
“What?”
“Sorry about Kariru…”
“Why do you hang out
with people like that??”
“Because… she
was my… friend…”
“You call- THAT-”
she spat the word as if it were dirty and disgusting, “a FRIEND?!”
When Yukiko didn’t
reply, she persisted. “Why in the hell would you think that SHE was your friend?”
Yukiko still remained quiet.
“Answer me!” She demanded.
“I… I don’t
know…” she replied meekly.
They heard the shrill toll
of the bell overhead.
“I’ve got to
get to class!” Yukiko blurted, and she rushed out of the room.
Briskly marching out of the
room, Jaiyne caught up with her, resting a soft hand on her shoulder.
“Hey!!” she said,
gently turning Yukiko to face her. “Just tell me why.”
“Why not?” Yukiko
shot back. Her voice sounded chokey. She held back tears, trying not to let her voice hint her feelings.
“Because! She’s
not a good person! Did you hear her? She called me gay- a lesbian!” Jaiyne raised her voice, and just as quickly fell
silent. “You don’t care, do you?”
“I’m sorry…
It’s… It’s not that. I just… I can’t explain right now!” Yukiko made a mad dash for her
next class, leaving Jaiyne behind, alone.
